Traditional beer-battered fish tacos with a unique beer-less flare. The special ingredient La Croix (coconut flavor) beverage gives these tacos an extra spritz of summer.

Beer-less Battered Fish Tacos

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 30 minutes
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x


  • Corn tortillas
  • 1 lb cod or halibut or Mahi Mahi (( this recipe uses cod))

For the batter:

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika powder
  • 1 tsp corn starch
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 cup La Croix coconut beverage

For the Slaw:

  • 2 cups cabbage mix
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • juice of one lemon
  • juice of one lime
  • zest of one lemon
  • zest of one lime
  • salt & pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Optional Toppings:

  • diced tomatoes
  • diced onion
  • sliced radish
  • lime wedges

Chipotle Mayo

  • 1/3 cup mayo
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lime
  • 1 chipotle in adobo, finely chopped


Prepare the batter:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the two egg whites until a stiff peak. (you can use an electric hand mixer) or simply whisk whith your hand. once ready, set aside.
  2. In another bowl, combine the flour, chili powder, paprika powder, corn starch, salt, and pepper, whisk to combine. Add the coconut La Coix and mix until a smooth batter forms. Gently fold in the egg whites and be careful not to deflate the egg whites.

Prep the fish:

  1. Cut the cod into 1×4 inch strips and season with salt and pepper.

Start Cooking:

  1. In a wide skillet over medium heat, add the oil until it is 1/4'' deep. Test the oil to see if it's ready by sticking a wooden spoon into the oil and if it bubbles, it's ready.
  2. While the oil is heating, dust the fish with a coating of flour. Once the oil is nice and hot, dip each floured fish into the batter , then into the hot oil and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. They should come out nice and golden. ( try not to crowd the pan otherwise your fish will not come out as crispy).
  3. When ready, remove with tongs, and lay over a rack lined with a paper towel or foil season with additional kosher salt.

Chipotle Mayo Sauce

  1. In a bowl, add the mayo, lime juice, water, and salt, mix until a creamy sauce forms.
  2. Stir in the chopped chipotle pepper.

Make the Slaw:

  1. In a large bowl, add the cabbage slaw, mayo, lemon and lime juice, lemon and lime zest, cilantro, salt & pepper and toss until everything is well incorporated.

Build your taco:

  1. Heat corn tortillas over a gas flame or over a heated skillet. Layer the taco with fish, cabbage slaw, additional cilantro , and creamy chipotle mayo.
  2. Enjoy while it's hot!
