Recipe FAQs
How long should I store spices?
Depending on the type of spice you use, generally whole spices last up to four years, and ground spices last up to three years.
However, I find that after one year, spices attend to taste stale and lose their potency. For this reason, I attend to buy spices in smaller containers vs. larger bulk containers.
What’s blackened seasoning made of?
It’s made with a blend of the following seasonings:
- Smoked paprika–add smokiness without the bbq being present.
- Garlic powder–adds umami and aromatics.
- Oregano–adds an herby flare.
- Cracked black pepper–I used fresh cracked black pepper (yes, I hovered over my kitchen counter grinding and collecting black pepper into my hands; otherwise, use coarse black pepper. I would not use ground for this recipe.
- Cayenne pepper–add the perfect amount of spice.
- Mint–adds freshness without being too overpowering.
- Allspice–gives sweetness without adding sugar.
- Cumin–this powerful spice is essential because it almost gives a meaty, savory flavor.
- Salt–I chose to add salt to the mix. However, you can omit it all together for a salt-free version.
Let’s make something spicy–I made Juicy Blackened Chicken Meatballs with this spice blend!
